Austria: Refugees stranded in Vienna, sleep on platforms

Austria, Vienna
September 1, 2015 at 06:39 GMT +00:00 · Published

Hundreds of refugees who boarded trains from Hungary were stranded in Vienna Central station, Tuesday morning, waiting to travel to Germany. Footage shows Men, women and children sleeping on floors of the train station, platforms or stopped trains, with the police heavily guarding the arriving and departing trains at the station. Volunteers have come to provide some food and water for the new arrivals.

Austrian authorities initially halted the trains near the Austrian-Hungarian border claiming they were overcrowded. Before sending the trains back on the road, the authorities checked whether the refugees aboard the train have applied for asylum in Hungary in which case they were not allowed to carry on with their journey. Austrian officials said that the rest of the refugees and migrants aboard the train will be allowed to stay in Austria for two weeks to decide if they wish to claim asylum there, with the rest being returned to their last country of transit, Hungary.

On August 21 Germany declared its suspension of the Dublin Regulation for Syrian refugees, requiring that migrants claim asylum only in the first country the enter within the EU. However Germany is now permitting officers to process applications of Syrian asylum seekers even if they travelled through other EU countries first.
