Germany: Europe could fall if migrant crisis not handled, says Germany Vice-Chancellor
Germany's Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel visited a refugee shelter that was the site of anti-refugee violence in Heidenau near Dresden, Monday, and commented on the migrant crisis the EU is currently facing.
Speaking during a joint press statement alongside Heidenau's mayor Juergon Opitz, Gabriel critisised the European Union's approach of handling the migrant crisis calling it "inappropriate" and "unfair." Europe is heading towards "regression" if some EU members keep distancing themselves from the responsibility for the refugees and migrants that keep arriving at its borders. "It is an enormous challenge, but honestly - which country can handle it if not Germany? We are one of the richest countries on this earth," he added.
The vice chancellor's visit comes after Heidenau's refugee shelter had to cope with numerous attacks and protests by far-right groups, as well as clashes with counter-protesters and police at its doorsteps over the weekend.
