Germany: EU must properly implement Schengen "rules and principles" - Cazeneuve

Germany, Berlin

The Schengen agreement in Europe will only work if all member states apply its rules and principles, French Minister of the Interior Bernard Cazeneuve warned as he spoke at a press conference with his German counterpart Thomas de Maiziere in Berlin, Thursday.

Both ministers announced their joint migration plans at the press conference, with Cazeneuve insisting that migrants arriving in the EU have to be registered along the principles of the Dublic Regulation. This means that migrants "have to be registered when they arrive, fingerprints have to be taken" and the official "re-entry process" has to be adhered to.

According to United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNCHR) figures, 340,000 asylum seekers and refugees have reached Europe's shores in the first seven months of 2015, up from 123,500 in 2014. There are currently 20 million refugees world-wide, and 60 million forcibly displaced
