Serbia: Refugees depart Belgrade for border with Hungary
Refugees gathered at Belgrade's main bus station to board buses heading toward the Hungarian border, Thursday. Buses to border towns like Kanjiza and Subotica, in northern Serbia, depart from the station every 20 minutes. Tickets are purchased days in advance of departure and are often sold out.
Serbia is being used as a conduit for migrant's journey into the EU. It is estimated that up to 2,000 refugees from the Middle East and Africa arrive in the Balkan country every day, with many of them staying in Belgrade in make-shift camps before continuing on to Hungary. In response, Hungary is constructing fences along its border with Serbia to prevent refugees from crossing their territory.
