Turkey: Burnt-out cars litter Diyabikir after PKK clash with security forces

Turkey, Diyarbakır
August 19, 2015 at 11:39 GMT +00:00 · Published

Clashes between Turkish security forces and members of the banned resistance group the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) left Diyarbakır's Silvan district in ruins, Wednesday.

Houses and shops were left heavily damaged by the gunfire, with the neighbourhoods of Mescit, Tekel and Selahattin bearing the brunt of the destruction. Cars were left burnt-out in the city's streets, with reports that affiliates of the PKK, the Patriotic Revolutionist Youth Movement (YDG-H), dug several ditches around the city to defend themselves against gunfire from security forces.

The battle is part of a series of operations by the Turkish state in wake of the July 20 Suruc bombing. Since then over 1,700 people linked to the PKK, Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS, ISIL) and the Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front (DHKP/C) have been arrested in actions across Turkey. Ankara continues to carry out air strikes on PKK bases in neighbouring Iraq.
