Russia: New Caucasus Emirate militant group leader killed in 'anti-terror' op
The Russian National Anti-Terrorism Committee (NAC) released footage of the operation in which the person believed to be the leader of the Caucasus Emirate militant group, Magomed Abdulaev, was killed in the Untsukulski district of Dagestan, Monday.
The committee added that he intended to lead the militant group, after his predecessor, Magomed Suleimanov, was killed less than a week ago. Abdulaev is believed to have been involved in some underground and military operations in Syria.
The Caucasus Emirate has been active since 2007 and has been classified a 'terrorist' organisation by Russia, the United Nations, the United States, United Kingdom and Canada. The organisation has claimed responsibility for the infamous bombings of the Nevsky Express in 2009, the Moscow Metro in 2010 and the 2011 Domodedovo Airport attack.
The group suffered a series of high-profile defections to the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) beginning in 2014, leading Suleimanov to release a statement condemning the defectors for their "betrayal." He became the leader of the group in May 2015, after Aliaskhab Kebekov was killed in a counter-terrorism operation close to Buynaksk.
