Russia: Lavrov meets with Iranian FM Zarif in Moscow

Russian Federation, Moscow

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif met in Moscow on Monday, with the aim to discuss the sale of Russian S-300 missiles to the Islamic Republic.

Lavrov stated that following the successful Iranian nuclear negotiations, Iran and Russia can form a more advanced relationship. Following the P5+1 negotiations, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree lifting the ban on the supply of S-300 surface-to-air missiles to Iran.

The FMs are expected to also discuss efforts to broker a peace-deal in Syria, despite the rejection of the previous Russia-Iran plan by the US, among others, who criticised the strategy since it allowed Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to stay in power.
