Israel: Protesters rally in solidarity with hunger striker Mohammed Allan
Hundreds of protesters gathered in the town of Arara, Saturday, in solidarity with Palestinian detainee Mohammed Allan who is being held without charge by Israeli authorities. Allan has been on hunger strike for 62 days now, and has consequently slipped into a coma.
Members of the demonstration sat down blocking traffic, and holding placards baring the face of Allan. Anger is expected to ring out through Palestine if the detainee dies while in detention.
Several Israeli hospitals, including the Barzilai Medical Centre in Ashqelon and Soroka hospital in Beersheba have refused to force-feed Allan. He is currently being injected with supplements essential for him to survive after falling into a coma earlier in the week. However, the Israeli parliament passed a law in July permitting authorities to forcibly feed those on hunger strike. The Israeli Medical Association is just one of the many critics of the law, some comparing the legislation to torture.
