Greece: Kos ‘eases’ migrant crisis by transferring thousands to Athens by ferry

Nearly 1000 Syrian migrants and refugees boarded a Blue Star ferry boat from Kos to Athens, Friday, as the holiday-island continues to be inundated with political and economic refugees.

An estimated 7000 Syrian refugees among others have arrived on the island of Kos since Monday alone. Only Syrians were reportedly allowed to board the boat due to their current asylum status in Europe. Earlier in the week thousands of migrants and refugees, predominantly from Syria and Afghanistan, were given makeshift shelter at a football stadium on the island as local police struggled to contain new arrivals on the island. Clashes reportedly erupted after officials refused to give entry to migrants who weren’t Syrian.

The French-based NGO Medicine Sans Frontieres (MSF) has criticised the lack of coordination and the conditions the migrants have to endure, as only a little food and water is being provided by Greek authorities in Kos. To deal with crisis, authorities sent another boat on Thursday to temporarily house the growing number of migrants on the island. The cruiser, which can fit up to 2,500 people, will reportedly function as an office for migrant registration.

According to United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNCHR) figures, 124,000 migrants, mainly from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan, have reached Greek shores in 2015, with 50,000 people arriving in July alone.
