France: Picasso masterpiece worth $29 million seized on yacht in Corsica
A $29 million (€26 million) Pablo Picasso painting belonging to Spanish banker Jamie Botin was transported from Corsica to Madrid on Tuesday, after it was smuggled out of Spain. Four police officers retrieved the "Head of a Young Woman" painting, which is considered a Spanish national treasure.
Spain's National Court ruled in May that the painting could not be taken out of Spain, backing a previous decision by the Culture Ministry. The ruling is currently under appeal at the Supreme Court.
The oil-painting was seized on a yacht docked at the Mediterranean island on July 31, when the boat's captain was unable to produce a certificate for the paintings transportation.
Jamie Botin, the owner of the painting, is the brother of the late Emilio Botin, the former head of the Satander banking group.
