USA: Protesters try to storm Waller County Jail, the place Sandra Bland died
Protesters marched on and attempted to storm Waller County Jail, the place Sandra Bland died, Sunday. The event was organised as part of a nationwide weekend of action to show solidarity with Sandra Bland and Michael Brown. Protesters can be seen banging on the doors of the facility before police officers open them and respond by trying to disperse the crowd. At least one person was injured at the rally, and was attended to by paramedics before being taken away in an ambulance.
The rally was organised by activist group Anonymous who also planned protests in 35 other cities across the US over the weekend.
Michael Brown was shot by officer Darren Wilson on 9 August 2014, sparking protests across the United States. On November 24 2014, the St Louis County grand jury announced that Darren Wilson would not be indicted and on 4 March 2015, the US Department of Justice cleared the police officer of civil rights violations claiming that Brown was shot in "self-defence."
Sandra Bland died on July 13 in her cell. Originally ruled a suicide, it is alleged that she was found hanging in her cell three days after she was arrested over a minor traffic incident.
The family of Bland, who was an anti-racist activist, say she was in positive spirits prior to her death after landing a job at a local university.
