Poland: President Duda calls for "greater" NATO presence as he takes office
The newly elected Polish President Andrzej Duda was sworn in at the Parliament building in Warsaw, Thursday.
The conservative leader took his oath in the presence of the National Assembly with his wife Agata standing by his side, becoming the sixth president of Poland since the country’s transition to 'democracy' in 1989. After the ceremony Duda addressed the National Assembly, emphasising that Central and Eastern Europe needs “a greater NATO presence” considering the current geopolitical situation.
The defeat of Bronislaw Komorowski and Duda’s victory was seen as a surprise in June’s presidential elections. Duda’s pledges include raising the tax-free income threshold and cutting retirement age.
