Ukraine: Poroshenko gives Russian politician Maria Gaidar national citizenship
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko gave Russian politician Maria Gaidar her new Ukrainian passport in person as the two met in Kiev, Tuesday. Describing the occasion as an "honour," Poroshenko shook hands with the former activist, who responded to Poroshenko by emphasising the "difficult" period the nation is going through before saying she wanted to "share the destiny" of the Ukrainian people.
The two were also joined by former Forbes-Ukraine editor Vladimir Fedorin, who was also handed a passport by the Ukrainian leader.
Gaidar is the daughter of former Russian Prime Minister Yegor Gaidar, one of the chief architects of the post-Soviet structural reforms implemented in Russia in the early 1990s. She was appointed to the role of vice-governor of the Odessa region in July 2015, one of a number of foreigners given administrative roles by Kiev-based authorities since the overthrow of former President Viktor Yanukovych in February 2014.
