Turkey: Suicide attack blamed on PKK kills two Turkish soldiers
At least two Turkish soldiers died after a suspected Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) attack rammed an estimated two tonnes of explosives with a tractor into the Karabulak Gendarmerie Station, in the Dogubayazit area of Agri, Sunday. It is the first time that PKK militants are accused of staging a suicide attack against Turkey since violence resumed.
The escalating violence in Turkey follows from the bombing in Suruc in which 32 people were killed in an attack affiliated with the so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL). In response, Turkey launched operations against both the PKK and IS.
Turkey has outlawed the PKK, and as violence has ensued, around 1,300 people have been arrested - many of whom active members of the party. Airstrikes have also been launched by the Turkish airforce on the semi-autonomous Kurdish regions, in which 260 have reportedly been killed. In response, the PKK has annulled the ceasefire of 2013.
