Malaysia: Beijing announced host of 2022 Winter Olympic Games
Beijing is to become the first ever city to host the Summer and Winter Olympic Games, after being awarded the right to host the 2022 Winter Games, at a ceremony in Kuala Lumpur on Friday. Thomas Bach, the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), told the crowd that it was an "honour to make the announcement."
Beijing was vying against the Kazakh city Almaty for the right to host the games. The decision was voted on by some 85 members of the 100-strong IOC, with Beijing winning by 44 votes to Almaty's 40 with one abstention.
The Beijing delegation said they would use the games as a springboard to tackle smog which often covers the Chinese capital.
Beijing has already proved its Olympic credentials when it successfully hosted the 2008 Summer Games.
