Ukraine: Kharkov mayor's trial postponed after clashes erupt outside court
Clashes erupted between police and pro-Kiev protesters outside Poltava courthouse on Tuesday, where Mayor of Kharkov Gennady Kernes was standing trial.
The Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) submitted an indictment against Kernes in March, accusing him of abducting, torturing and threatening to murder two pro-maidan activists who were reported missing by deputy of Kharkov regional council Ivan Varchenko, after a euromaidan demonstration on January 25, 2014.
As the security situation outside the court worsened, Judge Andrei Antonov announced the hearing postponed, due to the "day's discussions and the state of the attendees", and will resume on August 26. If found guilty, Kernes could face up to 10 years in jail.
