Germany: Thousands of PEGIDA supporters take on Dresden
Thousands of PEGIDA (Patriotic Europeans against Islamisation) supporters
marched through the streets of Dresden on Monday, to demonstrate against what they consider the 'Islamization' of Germany and Europe.
Marching with German flags, supporters carried banners denouncing "religious fanaticism" before rallying in Old Market Square, where founder and organizer of the movement Lutz Bachmann gave a speech, assuring the crowd that "PEGIDA is growing stronger, and they will see that we are still standing". Demonstrators sang the national anthem and chanted slogans such as "press liars" and "we are the people".
Meanwhile, hundreds of people staged a counter-demonstration under the motto "Open your Mind Stop Racism!". Police presence was high as clashes were expected, however the demonstration remained peaceful and no arrests were made.
