Iraq: Army battle Islamic State at University of Anbar

Iraq, Ramadi
July 26, 2015 at 12:41 GMT +00:00 · Published

Iraqi security forces entered the University of Anbar in Ramadi and clashed with members of the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS, ISIL), Sunday. The battle was part of the counter attack that Iraqi forces have launched in the western province of Anbar in an effort to retake the strategic city of Ramadi, some 105km (65 miles) west of Baghdad.

In May, pro-government forces retook parts of the university before withdrawing when IS militants captured the city of Ramadi.

Iraq's Counter Terrorism Service (CTS) led the operation, with Brigadier General Abdelamir al-Khazraji announcing the operation a success by reinstalling an Iraqi flag on one of the campus buildings, according to an Al Arabiya report.
