
India: Mourners trash school after 10-year-old dies following classroom punishment
Mourners ransacked a local school in the town of Huzurabad, Friday, after a 10-year-old girl died because of a teacher's punishment. The teacher allegedly made the child kneel on the ground for 20 minutes for not doing her homework.
Kolipaka Ashritha's punishment was administered in the in Karimnagar district school on July 16, along with five other students. She reportedly had a fever at the time of the punishment, and fell unconscious during the disciplinary measure. On being taken to the hospital later, her parents were informed by a neuro-surgeon that she had developed a blood clot because of kneeling down. The child passed away on Thursday, leading to the school's ransacking.
Both the school and the mourners, including Ashritha's parents, are being investigated by police for the separate incidents. The teacher who administered the punishment has reportedly not been arrested yet.
