Russia: We aim to eradicate racism in Russian football - 2018 WC CEO
Authorities will increase their efforts to eradicate incidents of racist behaviour at football matches in Russia, Alexei Sorokin, CEO of Russia's 2018 FIFA World Cup organising committee, said in an interview with RT in St. Petersburg on Friday.
Speaking ahead of the release of World Cup match schedules, Sorokin said "we regret that there are certain incidents of racist behaviour in Russia, but like we repeatedly said, we do not believe that it is endemic to our society."
The issue of discrimination in football has been examined in the European press this week after FC Ufa's Ghanaian midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong was sent off for reacting to what he believed to be racist chants directed at him during a match against Spartak Moscow, last Friday. Frimpong made a lewd gesture to the crowd and has since been handed a two-match suspension by the Russian Football Association.
Sorokin also spoke of Russian preparedness for the World Cup, saying "we can guarantee that everything will be ready."
