UK: Anti-BP activists storm British Museum in pro-Aboriginal protest

United Kingdom, London
July 24, 2015 at 12:32 GMT +00:00 · Published

A theatrical action group called 'BP or not BP?' staged a surprise protest performance in the British Museum's central hall in London, Friday, blocking the main entrance to the museum's 'Indigenous Australia: Enduring Civilisation' exhibition, sponsored by the oil and gas company BP.

Hundreds of visitors to the famed museum gathered around the performers, as they acted out a parodied version of BP's oil extraction programme. Protesters played dead animals killed by oil spills, whilst others acted as executives being showered in money with 'oil' dripping from their mouths.

The group charges the British Museum of ignoring criticism over their 'Indigenous Australia' exhibition, which has faced condemnation for both its choice of sponsor and alleged use of objects stolen from Aboriginal communities under British colonialism. Several Australian Aboriginal leaders have called for the return of the objects, including the Dja Dja Wurrung people of central Victoria who have already tried unsuccessfully to take legal action against the museum.

The 'BP or not BP?' group also aimed to highlight the museum's complicity with BP, holding the company accountable for what they describe as "BP's oil extraction activities, its gas extraction activities, its spills, its climate change."
