Greece: Capital controls threatening the lives of animals at this Athens zoo
Capital controls are threatening the lives of animals including dolphins, seals, flamingos, giant anteaters given the fact that their food must be imported from outside of Greece said Attica Zoological Park founder, Jean-Jacques Lesueur, in Athens, Thursday.
Lesueur reports that following the implementation of capital controls the zoo's three main suppliers demanded a full pre-payment before food was shipped to Greece. The measures put in place not only limit cash withdrawals but also the amount of money that can be transferred abroad. This means that fish, worms and specialised foodstuffs such as the Beta Carotene-rich pellets flamingos need to be fed in order for them to be able to retain their famous pink/orange hue.
Attica Zoological Park hosts around 2,200 animals of 340 different species.
