France: Mourners gather for Formula 1 star Jules Bianchi's funeral in Nice
The funeral of late Formula 1 star Jules Bianchi was held in his hometown of Nice, Tuesday. The 25-year-old driver died on Friday from head injuries he sustained on October 5, 2014, after he crashed into a recovery vehicle at the Japanese Grand Prix. He had been in a coma since the time of the accident until he passed away.
Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton, four time world champion Sebastian Vettel and other F1 colleagues joined Bianchi's loved ones inside the cathedral for the funeral, while motorsport fans gathered outside to pay their respects.
Bianchi's car number, 17, has been permanently retired from Formula 1 as a mark of respect to the driver. The French racer was the first driver to die as a result of injuries sustained at a Grand Prix since 1994, when Brazilian triple world champion Ayrton Senna was killed in San Marino.
