A wake was held for late Uruguayan footballer Alcides Ghiggia in the Legislative Palace in Montevideo, Friday. Ghiggia died of a heart attack on Thursday, aged 88, exactly 65 years after he scored the winning goal against Brazil in the 1950 World Cup final.

Ghiggia became the hero of Uruguay after scoring the decisive goal in the final, which became known as the 'Maracanazo' after the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro where the match was played. He was the last surviving member of the victorious Uruguayan team of 1950.

Born on December 22, 1926, Ghiggia started his domestic football career at the age of 19, playing for Sud America in 1945, before moving to Penarol in 1948. Following a five year stint at Penarol, the Uruguayan legend left his home country in 1953 to play for the Italian club Roma. During his time at Roma, Ghiggia played several games for the Italian national team on account of his Italian heritage. From Roma he moved to AC Milan before returning to Uruguay to play for Danubio in 1962. He retired as a footballer in 1967 and went on to manage his old club Penarol in 1980.
