Cuba: Steinmeier calls for closer ties to Cuba in historic visit
German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier announced that Germany will strengthen its ties with Cuba in a historic visit to Havana on Thursday.
For the first time since the Cold War and German reunification in 1990 a German foreign minister has travelled to Cuba, which used to have close links to the GDR. On the first day of his two day visit Steinmeier met with his Cuban counterpart Bruno Rodriguez and the roman-catholic archbishop Cardinal Jaime Lucas Ortega y Alamino. Furthermore representatives of both countries signed a foundation agreement, focusing on Cuba's and Germany's mutual exchange over the next years, which will serve as a "basis further singular agreements" according to Steinmeier.
On Monday Havana will further deepen relations with the West, as the United States and Cuba will re-open their embassies in Havana and Washington.
