The Italian coast guard picked up around 2,700 migrants in a series of operations off the coast of Libya, Wednesday. According to Italian authorities, the migrants were found in waters around 35 miles (55km) off the coast of Libya.
Italy, Greece and Spain are the main countries which migrants approach when they cross the Mediterranean in order to gain access to Europe.
