Yemen: Saudi-backed forces takeover Aden airport from Houthis
Saudi-backed Hadi loyalists seized control of Aden's main airport on Wednesday, pushing Houthi militants out from the area. Footage shows various military vehicles including humvees' closing in on the area, with the sound of gunfire heard in the background and smoke rising in the distance.
This is the first important win by the loyalists since the Houthi militias entered the port city of Aden in March, forcing then President Abedrabbu Mansour Hadi into exile in Saudi Arabia. Aden remains one of the strategic cities in the Yemeni conflict. According to military sources, the so-called 'People's Resistence' fighters have also captured a governmental building and are now in close proximity to a presidential palace held by Houthis.
According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), over 3,000 people have been killed by airstrikes and ground fighting since the conflict in Yemen began while over a million people have been displaced.
