Russia: Ukrainian pilot Savchenko could face up to 25 years in jail

Vladimir Markin, the Official Representative of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, announced that Ukrainian pilot and MP Nadezhda Savchenko could face up to 25 years behind bars after her charges were changed, in an announcement in Moscow, Monday.

Markin said that due to the "personal notes and the map" which were found on Savchenko's person, investigators have decided to change her charge from "complicity to the co-execution of killing of two or more people, motivate by hatred toward a social group."

Beside this charge, Savchenko is also being charged with the attempted murder of civilians, according to Markin. If convicted, Savchenko would not face a life sentence, rather due to her gender the maximum sentence she can receive is 25 years, under Russia's Criminal Code for women. Savchenko's trial is due to start shortly.

Savchenko has been detained in Russia since July 2014. She is accused of relaying the coordinates of a checkpoint where two Russian journalists were subsequently killed by Ukrainian artillery near Metallist, Ukraine, in June 2014.
