USA: Footage shows brutal police treatment of young black male
Video released on Wednesday shows police officers repeatedly striking 22-year-old African-American man Tyree Carroll during an arrest in Germantown, Philadelphia on April 3.
On the day of the incident Carroll was cycling his bike in the Germantown district of the city where he lives, when he was stopped by police for travelling the wrong way down a one-way street. After complying with officers requests to stop and dismount his bike, Carroll was accosted by four police officers wrestling the young man to the ground. After which officers are seen to repeatedly hit Carroll, verbally abuse him and threaten him with a Taser. All the while Carroll was heard screaming for his grandmother.
Carroll was subsequently charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, resisting arrest and several other drug charges stemming from a small amount of crack cocaine allegedly found on his person.
Carroll had a preliminary hearing on June 30, in which all the charges were maintained, except for one of the assault charges. His next court hearing is on July 21, however the young man is ineligible to be released due to a probation violation from a previous case.
