Poland: 'Germany respects Greece's democratic decision' - Schauble
"Of course we respect the democratic decision of Greece", German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schauble said, referring to the Greek bailout referendum, as he met with Polish Finance Minister Mateusz Szczurek and French Finance Minister Michael Sapin in Warsaw, Monday.
On Sunday, 61.3 percent of registered voters in Greece opted for a 'No' vote on the bailout terms proposed by its creditors, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), European Central Banks (ECB) and European Commission, while 38.7 percent voted 'Yes' in the referendum. Schauble said that he believes the Greek people rejecting the lenders proposal "hasn't made the situation any easier for Greece" and that the consequences of the decision will remain to be seen.
The German finance minister also addressed the resignation of his former Greek counterpart Yanis Varoufakis, saying that whilst they disagreed "on many points", it was "never a personal problem." Varoufakis announced his resignation following the referendum results and was replaced by Euclid Tsakalotos, who was sworn in Monday.
