Turkey: See water cannon BLAST LGBT festival goers in Istanbul
Amateur footage captured the moment a LGBT festival attendee was sent cartwheeling to the ground by a police water cannon in Istanbul, Sunday.
Turkish riot police also clashed with many other festival goers at Istanbul's LGBT Pride parade. Police used tear gas and rubber bullets as well as water cannon in an attempt to halt the march which had been banned by the city's authorities. Some in the crowd responded by throwing objects at the riot police. Thousands of festival goers had been congregating near Taskim Square when the police started to try and disperse them.
The procession was initially approved by the Istanbul Governor's Office; however they revoked their permission citing the ongoing Islamic Holy Month of Ramadan as the reason for the cancellation.
Sunday's parade was the thirteenth LGBT Pride Parade in Istanbul, it is commonly thought of as the largest LGBT event in the Muslim world.
