Syria: Kurdish forces seize strategic ISIS town
Footage shows Syrian Kurdish forces firing at fighters allegedly part of the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL), near Brigade 93 base - just north of IS stronghold Raqqa - Tuesday.
The fighting took place as Kurdish forces captured the base, a strategic victory that follows Popular Protection Unit (YPG) forces capturing Tal Abyad on the Turkish-Syrian border on June 16. The Brigade 93 base is located near the town of Ain Issa, which is located just under 60 (37 miles) kilometres from Raqqa.
The Kurdish advance has been backed by a series of US-led airstrikes, including one in Hasakah and five airstrikes targetting IS vehicles and tactical units near Tal Abyad on Monday 22. The airstrikes by the US in Syria (and Iraq) form part of 'Operation Inherent Resolve,' with coalition partners including Australia, Canada, France, the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia.
