USA: 'I refuse to act as if this is the new normal' - Obama on Charleston church shooting

United States, San Francisco

"I refuse to act as if this is the new normal. Or to pretend that it's simply sufficient to grieve and that any mention of us doing something to stop it is somehow politicising the problem", said US President Barack Obama in San Francisco, Friday, whilst discussing gun control in the USA in the wake of the Charleston church shooting that left nine people dead on Wednesday.

Speaking at the US Conference of Mayors, Obama said that "every country has violent, hateful or mentally unstable people. What's different is, not every country is awash with easily accessible guns." The US president went on to acknowledge that "we need a change in attitudes, among everybody; lawful gun owners, those who are unfamiliar with guns. We have to have a conversation about it and fix this."

On Wednesday, a white male, believed to be twenty-one-year-old suspect Dylann Roof, entered the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston and opened fire on the churchgoers inside leaving nine dead. Roof attended court on Friday where he faced nine charges of murder and one charge of possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. In court the suspect only spoke via video link when the judge asked him a question and otherwise remained silent for the rest of the hearing. Relatives of the victims addressed Roof one by one personally, some saying they had forgiven him for what he has done. His bail has been set at $1 million (€879,000).
