Turkey: Istanbul plastered in political bunting as general elections loom
Bunting bearing the insignia of Turkey's main political parties adorned the streets of Istanbul, Saturday, as voters prepared to cast their ballot in the country's national elections on Sunday.
The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) will have to stave off gains made by the Kurdish People's Democratic Party (HDP), the Republican People's Party (CHP) of Turkey's founding father Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP).
HDP is attempting to be the first Kurdish party in Turkey's history to pass the 10 percent threshold of votes required to take seats in parliament. If reached, the HDP could threaten the ruling AK Party's parliamentary supermajority and threaten plans to push through constitutional reform to transform Turkey from a parliamentary democracy into a presidential system.
