Russia: Human rights group have offices stormed in Grozny
Masked men stormed the offices of the Committee Against Torture (CAT), a human rights NGO, in the Chechen capital of Grozny, Wednesday. The assailants purportedly gutted the building, causing serious damage to nearby cars after a protest turned violent.
Demonstrators originally turned out to protest against what they see as the politicisation of human rights work in Chechnya. However, a more radical and unknown section of the crowd, armed with sledgehammers and wearing masks, started attacking cars near the building. They then turned on the offices themselves, smashing windows before entering the building, forcing committee staff to flee.
An official investigation is underway.
