USA: Senate passes US Freedom Act after rejecting renewal of Patriot Act

United States, Washington D.C
June 2, 2015 at 03:21 GMT +00:00 · Published

The US Senate voted in favour of passing the USA Freedom Act in Washington, Tuesday, ending a two year debate over the surveillance powers of the National Security Agency (NSA) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The vote follows the release of information by whistleblower Edward Snowden on the extensive powers of US surveillance agencies in 2013. Presiding Officer, Senator James Lankford announced that '67 Senators voted for the bill and 32 against.'

All three proposed amendments to the act were rejected, and Congress passed the bill which will attempt to control powers granted to the NSA and FBI under the now expired Patriot Act. The Patriot Act was introduced in 2001 following the aftermath of the September 11 attacks on New York’s World Trade Centre. Former NSA employee Edward Snowden revealed that the Patriot Act was being secretly used to validate the collecting of phone records of millions of Americans. The Patriot Act expired on June 1, after facing strong bipartisan opposition in the Senate.

Supporters of the bill claim that the act will stop the mass collection of telephone call records by the NSA, help reform the secret court system that oversees surveillance requests and increase government surveillance transparency.
