USA: Senate holds off USA Freedom Act vote

United States, Washington D.C
June 1, 2015 at 23:03 GMT +00:00 · Published

Senators are set to resume the consideration of the USA Freedom Act of 2015 on Tuesday, according to Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnel, who spoke at the Senate in Washington D.C. on Monday. The act if passed will roll back the means by which the National Security Agency can conduct mass surveillance, which was previously granted to them by the now expired Patriot Act.

The Patriot Act was introduced in 2001 following the aftermath of the September 11 attacks on New York’s World Trade Centre. Two years, NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden revealed that the Patriot Act was being secretly used to validate the collecting of phone records of millions of Americans. It expired on June 1, after facing strong bipartisan opposition in the Senate.

If the Freedom Act is passed, phone records would be stored by telecom companies and access to surveillance programmes would be limited.
