Switzerland: "I am the president of everybody now," says FIFA President Sepp Blatter
"I am now the president of everybody" including those who voted for Prince Ali, the freshly re-elected FIFA President Sepp Blatter said at the 65th FIFA Congress in Zurich just moments after winning the association's presidential election.
Blatter was in a jolly mood after Prince Ali bin Hussein of Jordan conceded defeat in the presidential election despite Blatter not receiving a two-thirds majority to win outright. Prince Ali gained 74 votes to Blatter's 133 in the first round. During his speech, Blatter also praised the Presidents of the Palestinian FA and Israeli FA, Jibril Rajoub and Ofer Eini, for compromising over the Palestinian bid to suspend Israel from FIFA which was dropped by Rajoub earlier that day. A handshake sealed the compromise between the opposition forces which relieved Blatter, he admitted.
Friday's presidential election was carried out amid an ongoing storm of corruption and bribery allegations, with 14 FIFA officials and executives in the firing line. Blatter was elected through a secret ballot and will hold the post for a period of four years.
