Switzerland: FIFA officials prepare to vote at 65th congress
FIFA officials began preparations for the organisation's 65th congress and its presidential election at Hallenstadion in Zurich Friday, amid the ongoing storm around corruption and bribery allegations linked to several of its members.
It is widely expected that long-time FIFA President Sepp Blatter will be elected to serve a fifth term at the helm. Fourteen FIFA officials have been arrested worldwide on corruption and bribery charges, but Blatter denies any involvement. In addition to the arrests, FIFA’s headquarters were raided and electronic data seized, Wednesday.
UEFA president Michel Platini has called for Blatter to quit as FIFA’s president and threatened to withdraw UEFA if changes are not made to the organisation. Blatter has vowed to restore people’s trust in FIFA should he be re-elected.
