USA: Unidentified oil-like substance washes up on California beach
Large sections of the California coastline have been closed off after an unknown petroleum substance washed up along the shore of Manhattan Beach in Los Angeles County, Wednesday. The mysterious globs of oil-like substance have impacted about 6.8 miles (11 km) of California's coastline from Longfellow to the El Segundo Jetty.
Los Angeles County lifeguard officials closed a stretch of Manhattan Beach as well as Hermosa and Redondo Beach coastlines. Officials have also warned residents to avoid contact with the water, wet sand and any materials that have washed ashore.
The mysterious substance washed ashore about a week after an oil pipeline spill off Refugio State Beach close to Santa Barbara.
