Spain: Barcelona's new activist mayor vows to only work with leftist parties
Catalan activist Ada Colau stated that she would only negotiate with what she calls 'leftist parties,' during a press conference in Barcelona, Monday, after she beat the ruling conservative People's Party (Spain) in Sunday's local elections to be voted mayor-elect of Barcelona.
The anti-poverty activist told press that she would only be working with Spanish parties Republican Left of Catalonia Socialists' Party of Catalonia (ERC) and the Candidates of Popular Unity (CUP). She went on to express a desire to create a partnership between the countries of the Southern Europe to fight austerity policies proposed by the International Monitory Fund (IMF), the European Union (EU) and the European Central Bank (ECB).
Colau's party, Barcelona En Comu, won 11 of the 41 seats in the elections, which means the leader has to form alliances in order to govern.
