USA: Multiple arrests at Oakland police brutality protest
Dozens of protesters were detained by police in Oakland on Saturday evening and into Sunday morning after demonstrators sat in the street, refusing to disband when asked to by the authorities. Around 100 protesters had gathered to rail against police brutality, and a new protest policy implemented by the city's mayor, Libby Schaaf.
The policy states that police can clear the streets of demonstrators and move them to the pavement if they are rallying at night. Schaaf implemented the bill after several businesses were damaged at an anti-police brutality protest in Oakland on May Day. The Mayor believes the new policy to be necessary for preventing property damage and violence.
There were no injuries or instances of vandalism or property damage reported.
