
El Salvador: 250,000 celebrate beatification of Archbishop Oscar Romero
More than 250,000 people swarmed the streets of San Salvador, Saturday, for a beatification ceremony for the fourth Archbishop of San Salvador Oscar Romero, who spoke out against social injustice, torture and poverty and was shot dead during mass on March 24, 1980.
His supporters - who travelled to San Salvador from all across Latin America - carried banners and chanted songs dedicated to Romero.
Pope Francis declared the archbishop a martyr on February 3, 2015 which paved the way for his beatification on Saturday.
