Ireland: Dublin electric as same-sex referendum set to approve gay marriage

Ireland, Dublin
May 23, 2015 at 13:46 GMT +00:00 · Published

Thousands gathered on the streets on Dublin, Saturday, in anticipation of the results of the Republic of Ireland's historic referendum on same-sex marriage. Around 3.2 million Irish voters were eligible to take part in the world's first plebiscite on same-sex marriage. The outcome, which is set to be a landslide victory for the 'yes' campaign, will decide whether marriage equality will be enshrined in the country's constitution.

Both Gerry Adams, president of the republican Sinn Fein political party, along with gay rights activist and drag queen Rory O'Neill, alias 'Mr Panti,' were in attendance as voters clamoured around screens showing the developments in the referendum.

Counting began at 08:00 GMT and early reports indicate that Ireland will vote 2:1 in favour of legalising same-sex marriage, a position supported by all the main political parties. The final exit poll results are expected to be known later on Saturday afternoon. While 21 countries give same-sex couples the legal right to marry, Ireland would be the first to do so via popular ballot. Homosexuality in Ireland was decriminalised just 22 years ago.
