Yemen: Saudi-led strikes resume in Sanaa after five-day truce ends

Yemen, Sanaa

Saudi-led airstrikes hit Sanaa on Tuesday, targeting forces loyal to ousted President Ali Abdullah Saleh. The strikes come after the expiration of a five-day ceasefire that was designed to allow for humanitarian aid to be brought into Yemen. The truce came to an end despite appeals from the United Nations (UN) to extend it, to facilitate the delivery of additional aid to those in need.

Some 300,000 civilians have been displaced during the conflict, with an added 27,000 people of various nationalities fleeing Yemen since the Saudi-led bombing campaign started more than seven weeks ago, according to UN figures. The Saudi-led coalition, which seeks to restore the government of former President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi and fight against the Houthi rebels, includes eight other Arab states and is receiving logistical support from the United States, Britain and France. UN figures report that over 1,500 Yemenis have been killed since the start of the campaign.

On his first visit to Yemen since assuming the role of United Nations (UN) envoy to Yemen, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed said on Thursday, May 15, that the severity of the human rights situation on the ground in Sanaa was unimaginable.
