Belgium: Lavrov attends Council of Europe meeting in Brussels

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov attended the annual meeting of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, in Brussels on Tuesday, The Russian delegation remains part of the Committee of Ministers despite having had its credentials to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) suspended in 2014. Other officials in attendance included Serbian Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic and Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjorn Jagland as well as Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders.

Jagland is set to give a report on human rights and the state of democracy in Europe, while 'radicalistation leading to terrorism' is also high on the agenda according to the initial draft. The Council of Europe's role in responding to current conflicts in Europe, including that in eastern Ukraine will also be assessed, as well as the Council of Europe's business interests with an emphasis on co-operation with the European Union (EU) and policy towards other regions.

Finally current Chairman of the Committee of Ministers Didier Reynders will hand over the chairmanship to Bosnia and Herzegovina, with Bosnian Foreign Minister Igor Crnadak expected to outline the priorities of his country's chairmanship.
