Russia: Putin allows Omsk governor to stand for early re-election
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed an executive order terminating the mandate of the Omsk Region governor, Viktor Nazarov, during a working meeting on the social, economic and political situation in Omsk, in Sochi on Thursday. Putin simultaneously appointed Nazarov as interim head of the region until September elections, in which Nazarov will stand for early re-election.
Nazarov sought the early termination of his role as Omsk governor, which he has held for the last three years in order to be able to stand once again. Russian law allows governors only to stand for one five-year term at a time.
On Wednesday, President Putin signed similar orders concerning the current governors of the Kamchatka and Irkutsk regions.
