
Poland: Poroshenko among leaders commemorating WWII in Gdansk
European leaders gathered in the port city of Gdansk on Thursday evening, to attend a midnight ceremony marking the 70th anniversary of the end of WWII. Polish President Bronisław Komorowski led Ukraine's Petro Poroshenko, Czech leader Milos Zeman and the presidents of Cyprus, Estonia, Lithuania, Croatia and Bulgaria, to the Monument of the Fallen Shipyard Workers where the leaders lay candles.
Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon and President of the European Council Donald Tusk were also in attendance.
Gdansk was heavily shelled after Nazi Germany invaded the country on 1 September 1939, leading
the UK and France to declare war two days later.
