USA: Street celebrations in Baltimore after six officers charged in Freddie Gray case
Residents of Baltimore celebrated in the streets on Friday after the city's top prosecutor announced that criminal charges would be brought against six police officers in relation to the death of Freddie Gray. The announcement came just hours after Maryland state's attorney Marilyn Mosby received the results of a police investigation into Gray's death.
During an address at a press conference, Mosby stated that "Mr. Gray's death was a homicide", and that the treatment of Gray by police whilst in custody amounted to both murder and manslaughter. Her remarks were met with cries of "justice" from onlookers.
The charges range from second-degree murder, filed against Officer Caesar Goodson who was driving the van that brought Gray in to the police station after his arrest, to involuntary manslaughter, assault, misconduct in office and false imprisonment. Five of the officers charged are now in police custody.
