Russia: Putin meets 'the elders,' regrets their departure from frontline politics
Russian President Vladimir Putin met with the so-called Group of Elders at Novo-Ogarevo, near Moscow, Wednesday. Putin expressed his regret that since the statesmen and women withdrew from front-line politics "the world has not become the easier place to deal with."
The high-profile gathering saw the Russian leader joined by the ex-UN chief Kofi Annan, the 39th US president Jimmy Carter, the former President of Finland Martti Ahtisaari, Mexico's former President Ernesto Zedillo, the former Prime Minister of Norway Gro Harlem Brundtland and Algeria's Lakhdar Brahimi.
During the meeting the president said getting the view of 'the Elders' on key issues of modern policy would be very helpful. The group is an unofficial organisation founded by Nelson Mandela
